Business, CTA & Aesthetics
Each student has the passion for the craft they are pursuing and be well-equipped with the relevant skills and knowledge to further their studies so that they are world-ready when then join the workforce.
The CTA and Business department is made up of elective subjects like Art, Design and Technology, Elements of Business Skills, Food Science, Music and Principles of Accounts. The purpose of the department is to help students discover their inclinations and to hone basic industry relevant skills for pursuance of further studies in the future. Students are exposed to all elective subjects in lower secondary before they make their specialisation in upper secondary.
The department's main focus is to help students discover their talent in craft, technology and aesthetics so that they are able to gain entry to tertiary institutions to further their knowledge pursuit. At the same time, the department prepares students to be workforce ready to give them an edge over their peers at their workplace in the future. Hence, the department adopts different pedagogies to engage students to ensure that they give of their best. Likewise, teachers will keep themselves updated and upgraded to ensure that the learning needs of the students are met.
The CTA and Business curriculum aims to provide basic foundation to industry relevant skills that will enable student to be workforce ready. At the same time, the curriculum also provide the academic aspect of the subjects so that students can have the opportunity to further their studies in the specialised courses in tertiary institutions. Hence, the syllabus has a good mix of coursework and theory to ensure that students are well equipped to face the future.
The department adopts a variety of pedagogy that it deems appropriate to engage students in the learning of different subjects. As the subjects are more skill based, the department is leaning towards experiential learning, incorporating ICT to keep students updated with the industry. The department also make use of Problem-based Learning to realism to ensure transference of skills to real life situations. In line with the school’s effort to enhance student learning, the department has adopted strategies advocated by Making Thinking Visible to hone thinking skills for deeper understanding.
The department has adopted various modes of assessment to ensure that students get a more holistic feedback on their performance. A good mix of coursework and written exam to ensure that students are prepared for national exam. As the duration of national exam coursework stretches from six to nine months, students will be exposed to such rigour in Secondary 3 to ensure that they can give their best at national exam.
To encourage appreciation of art, the department work with National Library Board to showcase some of our students’ art work. The art pieces have been exhibited in Jurong Regional Library, Bukit Panjang Library as well as Chua Chu Kang Library. In addition, students conducted craft workshops for the public at these libraries. It was a great opportunity for students not only to bring cheer to the community but also serving the community with skills they have acquired.
